Tell us about your hometown, family and hobbies.
I was born in Fort McMurray in northern Alberta and moved to Edmonton when I was three years old. I am the middle child of the family, with one brother being twenty and the other being sixteen years of age. Aside from my parents, I have both a stepmom and a stepdad in which my stepdad has two sons as well. In terms of hobbies, I typically enjoy any form of physical activity or sport when I’m not at the rink. If I had to pick one, I would say basketball is my second love next to hockey. For non-athletic activities, I enjoy photography, more specifically nature photography.
How did you originally begin playing hockey (what age as well) and what is your favourite memory from when you were younger?
I started skating lessons at three years old and transitioned to organized hockey when I was four. My favourite memory from when I was younger is when I would get 15-20 minutes of ice time before each practice with my dad to work on goalie drills and skating to improve my game. I credit much of my knowledge, compete, and ability to play the game on the time I got to spend working with him from a young age.
Who is your favourite NHL player and who do you model your game after? Why?
My favourite NHL player is Carey Price. For as long as I can remember he has been my idol both on and off the ice with his undeniable talent to play hockey and his motivation to give back to his community and to those who support him. Price is also someone whom I model my game after; when he is playing his best hockey, he is calm in the net and makes every save or movement look controlled and effortless.
What team do/did you play for? What was your favorite part from the season?
In my last year of minor hockey, I played for the U18 Prep team with OHA Edmonton in the CSSHL. My favorite part of that season was despite covid putting a pause and end to many athletes’ seasons, we were able to practice and workout as a team everyday within the Covid guidelines. Thus, giving a great opportunity to put in the work in areas that other individuals may have not been so fortunate to do so during those times. Currently, I play for the Chase Heat in the KIJHL, my favourite part of this season has been, getting to live away from home and experience new challenges and learning opportunities daily whether that be on the ice, or in life.
What are your top goals as a student athlete? Why are they your top goals?
As a student-athlete, I aspire to one day gain an education through my play on the ice as a hockey player. This is important to me because I believe the ability to gain an education in something I am passionate about while also pursuing my ongoing life goal of playing hockey at the highest level is something I have always dreamt about.
How important is school from your perspective? Why is it that way?
To me, school is always a top priority. Growing up, as much as I may have not liked it at the time, my family always put an emphasis on the fact that family comes first, then school, then hockey. So as much as I would have wanted my priorities at one point to be hockey, family, school, I had to make sure I was carrying my weight at home by helping out when asked or needed, and at school by maintaining my grades. In the end, I credit my upbringing to the fact that I believe I am a person first, then a student, then an athlete.
What would it mean to you to play at the NCAA or Pro level?
Playing at either the NCAA or at a professional level would mean the world to me. Like every kid who starts out playing hockey, becoming a professional has always been a dream and in many ways is still an end goal for myself. As for the NCAA, I have come to learn so much more about it over the past few years and view it as my top priority goal within the foreseeable future.
What separates you as a player or person? How do you continue to get better?
As a person, I believe I stand out compared to other individuals due to my strong set of moral values. Simply considering the environment I grew up in, I have very strong role models within my family who are always there to help me correct my wrongs and are never afraid to humble me or my siblings. Which is in part why I find it difficult to in a sense brag about why I am a better person than someone else in this paragraph. If I had to summarize myself as a person, I would say that I am a driven, selfless individual who holds true to their morals and beliefs no matter what the circumstance. I work at becoming a better person each day by putting myself outside of my comfort zone in situations where I am able to grow as a person. This applies to my performance on the ice as well by pushing myself a little harder each day and constantly looking for areas to improve on.
What impact are you looking to have in your sports careers (community, team, success, etc.)
In my sports career, on the ice I look to give my team a chance to win each and every night while representing the game in the best way possible. In terms of community, I hope to one day reach a point where I can be looked at as a role model for younger athletes and those around me.
One fun fact about yourself.
A fun fact about myself is that I love animals, between both my parents houses we have a total of 5 dogs!
